About Billy
Wiremu “Billy” Johnstone is a Māori volleyball player and proud descendant of Ngāti Porou and Rongowhakaata. His journey from high school standout to elite-level middle blocker has been defined by leadership, perseverance, and excellence.
Billy’s volleyball career began at Western Heights High School, where he was Head Boy and won multiple national titles in both indoor and beach volleyball. He earned three consecutive NZSS National Tournament Team selections, setting the foundation for his future in the sport.
After receiving the Top Achiever Scholarship, he attended University of Auckland, winning a UTS National Championship and earning Rookie of the Year honours. He then moved to the University of Alberta, where he played in the USports Canada West conference, securing two National Championships and back-to-back Canada West titles, along with All-Rookie and multiple All-Star selections.
Billy has represented Aotearoa internationally, captaining the Junior National Team and competing with the Volley Blacks. With a BSc in Kinesiology, he combines his playing experience with a deep understanding of performance and athlete development.
As the Founder of AVA, Billy is committed to growing the sport in Aotearoa, providing young athletes with the education, mentorship, and opportunities to succeed.
